Programme Overview

The aim of the undergraduate dental curriculum is to provide a structured programme which ensures that graduates are competent to deliver the full range of primary dental care, including prevention, diagnosis and treatment of oral and dental diseases. Treatment involves areas such as the restoration of damaged teeth, the correction of irregularities, the replacement of missing teeth and surgical procedures such as the removal of teeth.

The 5-year programme incorporates the vertical integration of traditional "pre-clinical" and "clinical" subjects to deliver an educational experience and training which follows contemporary "best practice" teaching methodologies.

In the first and second years, the emphasis is on the study of the appropriate basic and biological sciences such as Anatomy and Physiology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Pathology, Physics and Chemistry. The courses in these years also contain significant attention to generic skills including communication and computing / information technology skills, as well as the specific skills that are central to the practice of dentistry. Students commence patient treatment in the clinical setting early in the second year in both Trinity College Dublin and University College Cork.

During the later years, the focus moves increasingly towards clinical training and the development of psychomotor skills. An evidence-approach is used in the management of Oral Health and Disease taking cognisance also of related general health care issues for the individual and the community. Areas of study in these years include Human Diseases covering both medical and surgical aspects, Public Dental Health, Orthodontics and Paedodontics, Restorative Dentistry including periodontics, prosthodontics, material science and geriodontology, Oral Surgery and Oral Medicine.

Is this the right programme for you?

Dentistry provides a rewarding career in the provision of oral health care for patients. It is a very satisfying career in terms of social interaction and performing clinical procedures to a high standard. The dentist also fulfils an important function in educating patients regarding oral care. Dentistry will appeal to students who have empathy for people, who are interested in their welfare, and who like carrying out precision work with their hands.
